Autumn 2023
Science Investigation
Children have been investigating the nutrition quantity of everyday foods and deciding whether each food can classified as healthy or unhealthy. It was lovely to hear discussions taking place amongst the children that included new vocabulary and reasoning.
Educational Visit
The children had a fantastic time at Kingsley & Co! They were given the exciting challenge to solve riddles, supported OLW in encouraging children to have a love for reading and even designed their own dragon! An author taught the children the story of the Chinese New Year and even ‘magpied’ some of their ideas for illustrations for his books! What an achievement!
Resilience and Growth Mindset
Here at OLW, children’s mental health and well-being is a main priority. Year 3 took part in drama sessions to fully understand the meaning of resilience and having a growth mindset. In their PSHE lesson children were given different scenarios to discuss and perform to the class to identify struggles and issues that may hinder their emotional and educational development. Superb work! Well done!
Shape Poetry
Year 3 have worked superbly in English! We have read and analysed a range of shape poems and discussed how each shape poem could be presented. The children have used their wonderful imaginations saying and writing beautiful similes to support their poetry. Fantastic work Year 3!

Design and Technology
The children had a wonderful time during design and technology being innovators and inventors! We explored a range of levers and sliders and discussed the effect that the lever and/or slider had on the object. Children were then given the opportunity to design and make an object, incorporating the newly taught skill.
Animals Including Humans
Once the children had named the different bones that form our skeleton, we began to name and learn the function of our organs. We investigated why some organs may be surrounded by water and predicted what the function of water could be. We investigated this by placing a raw egg in a container full of water and shook the container. Children recorded their observations. We removed equal amounts of water each time and recorded our observations. We concluded that water can act as protection from damage because without water, the egg cracked.
Animals Including Humans
As part of our science topic, children explored the human skeleton and worked together to build and name the bones.
Gymnastics
We have learned so many new skills in PE this term. We have thoroughly enjoyed working collaboratively and refining our movements.
Handwriting
Children in Year 3 have been working so hard to use cursive writing in their work
The Tin Forest
The children took part in a collaborative speaking activity where they were asked to share ideas and decide on a theme for the story. Superb work Year 3!
Fitness Circuit
The children had a fantastic time completing their sponsored fitness circuit!
Well done for working so hard!
